Rapid Response Dewatering: Thompson Pump Keeps Kentucky Quarry in Operation

When a gravel pit in Butler, Kentucky needed fast-response, temporary dewatering after its vertical turbine pumps failed, Thompson Pump was there with the solution.

CHALLENGES

1.     Elevation Change: With a 200-foot elevation difference from the pit to the selected discharge location, the dewatering system required robust pumping equipment capable of overcoming the height without losing efficiency.

2.     Distance and Piping Requirements: The water needed to be moved more than 1,000 feet using 12-inch HDPE piping, adding significant frictional resistance and requiring pumps with high performance.

3.     Continuous Operation: The job demanded around-the-clock operation, over a three-month period, which required pumps with high durability and minimal downtime for maintenance.

SOLUTION

The quarry team turned to Blue Tank & Pump Rental. Blue Tank deployed two Thompson Pump & Manufacturing Company’s 6JSCD-DJDST-45HCO4-M pumps to run in tandem. These pumps were selected because they could handle the high flow rates and pressure demands needed to move the water over the long distance and elevation required. The tandem configuration allowed the pumps to provide continuous service with enough redundancy to manage the demanding operating conditions without disruption.

RESULTS

The temporary dewatering system enabled the quarry to maintain its operations without major delays, and the continuous pumping minimized the risk of any downtime, ensuring the gravel pit was kept dry. The Thompson Pumps enabled the quarry to maintain normal operations and mitigate costs.
